A crown is a kind of cap that is used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is already broken down and is to be restored with filling. A crown may be required in case of: Extensive damage by decay, fractured, chipped or sensitive teeth, root canal treated (RCT) teeth, esthetically compromised teeth etc. A smaller cavity can be fixed with just filling but when cavity is bigger, then it must be treated with a crown. Because even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is still likely to break. A broken or cracked tooth can be a more serious matter and difficult to treat which may then involve complicated dental procedure for treatment. So, basically a crown serves the purpose of protecting a weakened tooth from chipping off or breakage. So, in order to avoid any such situation it is imperative to use crowns.

For a crown treatment it usually takes two to three sittings to restore a tooth with a permanent crown. In the first sitting any decay from the tooth is removed, after which the tooth is shaped to place the crown over the shaped tooth. An impression of the shaped is taken to make a crown out of it. After this as per the customer choice a crown is material for crown is chosen. During the time permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown is worn. In the next visit, the temporary crown is removed and after checking the permanent crown in all respect to make sure that it fits well without any problem, the permanent crown is fixed with cement.
